Nelly Furtado Kim was born on December 2, 1978 in Victoria, Canada, and is a pop singer, also author-composer. Originally Portuguese Furtato also has Canadian nationality. Nelly Furtado, is of Portuguese parents from Sao Miguel, Azores island. They called Nelly Kim Furdato in reference to the Russian gymnastics champion Nellie Kim who won 5 gold medals and 1 silver at the Olympics.

Nelly Furtado has a brother and sister. She has learned to play trombone, guitar and ukulélé at the age of nine and 11 years old for the synthesizer. Passionate about music from an early age, she knows at 4 years old that she wants to become a singer. Nelly Furtado sang with her mother in a choir, especially during the National Day of Portugal.


As a teenager, Nely Furtado began writing songs and becomes part of a Portuguese marching band. During this period, she listened to R & B, hip hop, alternative rock, alternative hip-hop, trip hop, fado, bossa nova, Indian music and variety.
